On today’s episode of the Flourishing Therapreneur, we are joined by Dr. Jenn Kennedy, LMFT.
This episode is for you if you are:
- An established private practice therapist looking for ways to expand your reach and impact.
- Considering adding associates to your practice but haven’t made the leap yet.
- Wondering what risks accompany onboarding associates into your practice.
- Curious if adding associates is actually rewarding (both financially and professionally) for private practice therapists.
- And interested in tangible tools you could use to make the transition to adding associates to your private therapy practice.
I learned SO much chatting with Jenn about onboarding associates in private practice. She tells her amazing journey of how she added associates to her practice, including how to know when you are ready to add associates, what worked well for her, and what is especially challenging in that process. We sort through motivation for wanting to onboard associates, along with how we can hold expectations to make this process successful. If you have been considering adding associates to your private therapy practice, or if you haven’t thought about it but now are curious, Jenn gives excellent, tangible tools for you to get started and paints a realistic, promising picture for how onboarding associates can expand your brand AND your impact!

On today’s episode of the Flourishing Therapreneur, we are joined by Ashely Quamme, LMFT.
This episode is for you if you are:
- New to the concept of financial therapy and curious about what it entails.
- Interested in learning more about the four money mindsets and better understanding which category you fall under.
- Curious about where our money mindsets come from and how they relate to attachment theories.
- Committed to resetting your mindset around money, especially as a therapist in private practice, in order to earn a salary you deserve.
- And motivated to create space in your life for financial self-care, creating more balance and peace in your person and professional life!
I had so much fun sitting down with Ashley to talk about money mindsets and how they impact our work as therapists in private practice. We took a deep dive into the four main scripts around money: Money Avoidant (spoiler: most mental health professionals fall under this category!), Money Vigilant, Money Status, and Money Worship, including what each of them look like and how they can show up in our lives. We took a step back to look at where we may have learned these scripts, as well as how grad school has impacted our thoughts about money and our work helping others. Finances feels like a taboo topic for many people, so Ashley and I are uncovering YOUR money story to help you focus more on financial self-care and balance!

I am so proud of and inspired by all of the guests, conversations, and feedback from season two, and CANNOT WAIT to share season 3 with you this July! - Motivated to pour more energy into the parts of your private therapy practice that allow you to share your knowledge and experience with your audience

S2E9: Writing a book as a therapist + entrepreneur
Tuesday Apr 26, 2022
Tuesday Apr 26, 2022
On today's episode of The Flourishing Therapreneur, I am opening up about my experience of writing my first book.
This episode is for you if are:
- Considering writing a book or have been approached by a publisher about writing one
- Curious about the writing process, including the highs and the lows of the journey
- Wondering about the reality of writing a book while practicing as a therapist in private practice
- Motivated to share your experience and expertise with the world through writing
- And interested in discussing the boundaries and limitations required when writing a book for a publishing company.
I feel relieved and exhausted after submitting my manuscript of my first book, and I am so excited to tell you all about it! What I didn’t know going into the writing adventure (oh, what an adventure it was!), what surprised or challenged me, as well as the emotions I felt throughout the process–I am sharing it all with you in this podcast episode! As therapists, we are trained to go deeper into our encounters with clients and our interest areas within our field, so it makes sense that some of us feel called to share our knowledge and experiences with the world through writing. I have learned so much throughout the journey of writing my first book, and I am excited to share my experience with you and use what I have learned in the writing of my future books (after a period of rest, of course!).

On today's episode of The Flourishing Therapreneur we are joined by Amy Pinnell, MSW, RSW of @sensitivesocialworker
This episode is for you if are:
- Contemplating whether you are a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) and how you got here (spoiler: you were born with it!)
- Curious about which traits of being a HSP make us good therapists and help our clients succeed in therapy
- Interested in honoring HSP traits in private practice and valuing these in your business
- Struggling with burnout and want to bring balance back to your private practice
- And wondering how to flourish as a HSP in private practice by looking inward and participating in deep self-care.
I learned so much sitting down with Amy to talk about Highly Sensitive People (HSP) and how HSP function as therapists in private practice. We chatted about the many qualities that HSP possess that make us really good therapists and how these qualities help our clients feel seen and successful. We tackle burnout for HSP, including how burnout can happen and how we as HSP can offset this unhealthy capacity. Finally, true to the Flourishing Therapreneur mission, we explore how HSP can flourish as therapists, including setting boundaries for our energy and utilizing soul-nourishing self-care techniques. If you think you might be a HSP (and even if you think you’re not!), check out this episode to better understand yourself and learn how you can set yourself up for success as a therapist in private practice.

On today's episode of The Flourishing Therapreneur we are joined by Kelley Stevens, LMFT of @theprivatepracticepro
This episode is for you if are:
- Contemplating the switch from agency to cash pay private practice but don’t know where to start
- Curious about which skills from agency practice will help make your private therapy practice successful
- Interested in breaking this transition down into manageable, achievable steps
- Longing for more financial freedom, both in making more money and choosing how you give back
- And wondering how private practice can actually be easier than agency work (yes, that’s right!).
I had so much fun sitting down with Kelley to talk about the nerve-wracking but liberating transition from agency to cash pay private therapy practice. We got into the nitty-gritty details of how to make this transition smooth, highlighting some important and manageable places to start. We also discussed how you can use the skills and experiences you already have to make your private therapy practice a success, because you’re not starting from scratch making this switch! Kelley brings us all back down to earth by reminding us that everything in private practice can be figured out one step at a time, and noting that we already have done a lot of the hard work in agency practice that will make private practice feel even more enjoyable. Breaking this process down into bite-sized pieces to bring more balance and freedom to our lives as therapists, I feel even more inspired to share the information and encouragement with all of you!

On today's episode of The Flourishing Therapreneur we are joined by Nicole McNelis, M.Ed., NCC, LPC.
This episode is for you if you are:
- Open to transforming marketing your private therapy practice from painful to pleasant
- Curious about how small steps can make big waves, just by staying true to your authentic self
- Committed to repurposing the skills you already have to shift your marketing mindset (and see behavior follow suit!)
- Fueled by connection and using connections to help grow your therapy practice
- And interested in working smarter (not harder!) by making it easy for colleagues and clients to remember you, count on you, and refer new clients to you!
I learned so much visiting with Nicole about repurposing clinical techniques to update marketing and mindset. We addressed how therapists already possess some of the most important marketing tools out there: relationships, rapport, and reciprocity. As therapists, we are comfortable connecting with others, so it only makes sense we would use these existing skills to grow our private practices by marketing with other providers. Nicole highlights the importance of a two-way street with this approach, as well as making yourself visible and memorable in order for these methods to be successful. I felt so encouraged knowing I already have a skillset that can make my marketing strategy successful, growing my private practice AND connecting with other awesome practitioners!

On today's episode of The Flourishing Therapreneur we are joined by Catie Lynch, LCSW.
This episode is for you if you are:
- Longing to ditch feelings of guilt and shame around wanting more money for your services
- Frustrated about gender norms around money, pay, and expectations in the workplace
- Yearning to shift your money mindset from scarcity to abundance
- Wondering how to raise your rates without losing clients
- And interested in being happy because you should be, even when being happy feels like you’re going against the grain.
I learned so much from my conversation with Catie about shifting money mindset in private practice. Catie dissects how a scarcity mindset with both money and clients tends to drive fear in our field, and how limiting that fear can be for us as providers. Reflecting and challenging our own thoughts and feelings around money will help each of us realize how possible it is to raise rates AND still be successful! We are shattering the guilt and shame that often comes with wanting money and happiness in our careers, and forging ahead to create a business (and mindset!) filled with abundance!
I hope this episode enlightens you and I can’t wait for all this season has to bring!
